Prof. Charalambos (Bambos) Demetriou Charalambous received his B.S., M.E., and Ph.D. in 1987, 1988, and 1992, respectively, all from the Department of Electrical Engineering, Old Dominion University, Virginia, USA. He is currently serving as Dean of the School of Engineering (second term since 2018); in the past he has served as Associate Dean. In 2003 he joined the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Cyprus, as Associate Professor and was promoted to the rank of Professor. From 1999 to 2003 he served as Associate Professor at the University of Ottawa, School of Information Technology and Engineering, from 1995 to 1999 he served on the faculty of McGill University, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, as a non-tenure faculty member, and from 1993 to 1995 he as  a post-doctoral research fellow at Idaho State University.

Bambos earlier research work included the areas of stochastic optimal control of nonlinear stochastic differential equations (SDEs) and nonlinear filtering of SDEs, risk-sensitive pay-offs and their relations to robustness, minimax games, and statistical mechanics, Expectation Maximization for SDEs, modelling of wireless communication channels with SDEs, networked control over noisy communication systems, problems of  information theory, lossless compression, rate distortion theory, and capacity of Gaussian channels with memory. His current research work includes stochastic optimization and Markov Decision theory subject to distribution ambiguity, decentralized stochastic cooperative and non-cooperative dynamic games with non-classical information structures, generalizations of Shannon’s information theory to controlled sources and stochastic control systems, nonanticipative or causal rate distortion theory for unstable sources, capacity of unstable communication channels with memory, control-coding capacity and control-coding of unstable stochastic control systems, networked lossy compression.

Bambos serves as Associate Editor of the Systems and Control Letters (since 2010), as Associate Editor of the Mathematics of Control, Signals and Systems (since 2010), and as Associate Editor for Nonlinear Analysis: Hybrid-Systems (since 2015).  In the past he served as  Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control and as Associate Editor of the  IEEE Communications Letters. In the past he served two terms (2008-2016) as Chair of Technical Committee-Stochastic Systems of the IFAC (International Federation of Automatic Control), and one term as vice-chair (2016-2020) and he served on Conferences Editorial Board of the IEEE Control Systems Society. At the University of Ottawa, Bambos  received the Premier’s Research Excellence Award of the Ontario Province of Canada. At the University of Cyprus, he received a Marie Curie International Reintegration Fellowship from the European Commission.

Over the years, his  research has been  funded via competitive grants by the Communications Research Centre Canada, the Canadian Department of Defense, National Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada, European Commission, Qatar Foundation, Cyprus Research Promotion Foundation, University of Cyprus (via Competitive grants).  Bambos has authored and co-authored more than 300 scientific articles in international journals and conference proceedings, that include SIAM Journal on Control and Optimization, IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, Automatica, Systems and Control Letters, IEEE Transaction on Information Theory, IEEE Transactions on Communications, and others.
